Who Was Abraham?

4,000 years ago, Abraham lived in Ur, now southern Iraq

At that time, people worshipped many gods.  Abraham knew there to be only one God who called him to leave his city and go into the promised land.  God made a covenant with him, promising that his people would become a great nation, and this has indeed come to pass.  Today three billion people – half of the world’s population – claim Abraham as their spiritual ancestor.

The most famous stories about Abraham occur in the Torah, but he is also mentioned in the Christian New Testament and in the Qur’an.

Along with Abraham’s faith in one god, modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam share many ethical teachings – though each speaks in its own distinctive voice.
